There is no fixed price for acquiring a customer through Facebook or Instagram. Audience, offer, competition, creative, timing and measurement all affect the result. A budget should therefore be based on the business’s economics and a limited test.
It is also necessary to separate money paid to Meta from the cost of creating, setting up and managing the campaign. A stated media budget is not the whole investment.
What are you paying for?
Meta delivers ads through mechanisms including auctions. Meta Blueprint describes auction and reservation buying types. Pricing and available options depend on the campaign setup; this is not a standard price list per customer.
CPC is cost per click, CPM is cost per thousand impressions, and cost per lead is cost divided by recorded leads. These metrics answer different questions. Cheap clicks are of little help if the visitors do not fit the offer.
Work backwards from an affordable acquisition cost
Fictional calculation example: If you can spend NOK 2,000 in media costs to acquire one customer, and one in five qualified enquiries becomes a customer, that equates to NOK 400 per qualified enquiry. This is a planning assumption, not a market price or a promise of results.
If only half of all enquiries qualify, the cost per received enquiry must be lower to achieve the same economics. Also include production, consulting, software and internal time. Customer value should be based on margins and a realistic duration, not revenue alone.
Set clear boundaries for the trial
Choose one offer, a relevant audience and a budget you can spend on learning. Agree in advance which observations will prompt changes. Do not spread a small budget across so many ad variations that none produces meaningful data.
Run the test long enough to capture normal variation and any delay between click and purchase. No universal number of days suits every business. Assess duration against volume and the buying process.
Examine the quality of enquiries
Record whether enquiries match your services, geography and expectations. If many people misunderstand the offer, the ad or form may be the problem. The solution is often a clearer explanation, not more spending.
Compare platform reports with enquiries actually received. Attribution, consent and measurement errors can cause differences. Keep definitions stable while evaluating the trial.
What should a provider’s proposal include?
Ask for a clear distinction between media spend, production, setup and ongoing work. Clarify ownership of the ad account and assets, who follows up leads and what reporting should show. Also describe how budget changes are approved.
