Digital marketing: Trends and priorities worth the effort

AI, search, advertising and follow-up: distinguish useful changes from noise and choose what your business should prioritise.

Three priorities: relevant visibility, a clear way to get in touch and someone responsible for following up.
Find where the customer journey stalls before choosing the next channel or tool.

A new channel is not automatically the right next investment. If you already have enough enquiries but take too long to respond, better enquiry handling may add more value than another campaign. If you have capacity but few relevant visits, visibility is a more natural priority.

This guide replaces our trend articles from 2018 and 2019. Predictions about voice search, AR and personalisation have been replaced with an assessment of what businesses can actually act on now.

1. AI is changing search, but the need for good answers remains

Google has AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google states that standard SEO principles still apply and no special AI markup is required to appear there. No one can guarantee that a particular business will be cited.

Start with questions customers ask before contacting you: cost drivers, alternatives, limitations, delivery and experience. A specific explanation with a real example helps them decide. A hundred versions of the same generic text rarely do.

2. Automated advertising needs clear goals

Automation can help with bidding and ad delivery, but the system needs a goal that matters to the business. If every form submission counts equally, a campaign may look good even when many enquiries are irrelevant.

Distinguish a received enquiry, a qualified opportunity and a customer. Google describes separate goals for qualified and converted leads. Privacy and technical arrangements must be clarified before sharing such data. A simple internal overview of quality is a good starting point.

3. Measurement improves when its limitations are visible

Visits, ad clicks, recorded events and actual customers come from different systems. They will not always match. Consent, attribution and the events recorded affect the reports.

Create a regular report with a few defined measures. Note measurement changes. Compare matching periods and check results against enquiries actually received. The impact measurement guide shows how.

4. Content must demonstrate expertise

Use your own images, specific working processes and explanations of difficult choices. AI can help with outlines, language and variations, but figures, experiences and expert claims must be checked. Do not present fictional customer stories as evidence.

Update a useful existing article before creating another that answers the same question. Give each page a clear task and link onwards when readers need more depth.

5. Follow-up is part of marketing

A good form gathers what the recipient needs to help. Someone must then own the enquiry, know the next step and see what is waiting. This can be handled through organised email, a CRM or a custom system, depending on the need.

This is the connection we work on in form setups and system projects: from interest to clarification and continued follow-up. Technology is chosen to suit the way of working.

Choose one improvement first

Write down where you lose the most value in the journey, the observations supporting this and what you want to change. Agree who will do the work and when you will assess its effect. Allow time for follow-up before expanding to more channels.

For a structure to guide the work, start with a digital strategy. Trends are useful when they help you prioritise, rather than simply lengthen the task list.
