Targeting helps an ad platform choose who may see ads. It does not guarantee everyone has the need, budget or authority to buy. A useful audience description must therefore connect to a clear offer and checks of actual enquiries.

It is particularly useful to distinguish what the customer expresses, what the platform knows or estimates and what you have documented yourself.

Search intent and profile information are different signals

In search advertising, the query is a key signal of an immediate need. Yet the same words can mean different things. Someone searching for a system may be a customer, student, competitor or simply looking for a login.

LinkedIn offers targeting by job title, company and industry, as the platform describes here. This can be relevant in B2B, but a job title alone does not reveal someone’s buying situation.

Distinguish constraints from suggestions

Automated setups may use audience information as signals and expand who sees the ads. Check which fields actually restrict delivery in your setup. Do not assume a saved interest or persona is a hard boundary.

Meta describes audience and advertising automation. This makes clear goals and feedback important. Check the settings available in the relevant account, as features and interfaces can vary.

Match geography to your service area

Define the service area and any limitations before starting the campaign. Monitor where relevant requests come from and compare this with the settings. A geographic signal is not always a precise description of a customer’s actual address or project location.

Make your service area clear in the ad and landing page. This helps customers choose correctly even when the platform’s estimates are imperfect.

Avoid targeting that is unnecessarily narrow or broad

A very small audience may produce little learning and repeated impressions for a few people. A very broad setup may spend money on irrelevant needs. Test audience breadth against budget, geography, offer and available data.

Messaging is part of qualification. An ad saying ‘service for business customers in Vestfold’ clarifies more than a general promise of quality and low prices.

Use your own data for a clear purpose

Before using customer lists or visitor data, clarify the basis for collection, sharing and advertising. An existing contact list does not automatically permit uploading information to an advertising platform. Read the privacy guide before choosing the setup.

Finally, measure what targeting actually produces: relevant enquiries, conversations and customers. That is better evidence of quality than a detailed-looking audience description in the ad account.
